Privacy Policy

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

When you visit IBWC.gov, we will automatically collect and store the following information about your visit:

  • Name of the Internet domain (for example, "xcompany.com" if you use a private Internet access account or "yourschool.edu" if you are connecting from a university's domain).
  • IP address (a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you are using the Internet) from which you access our site.
  • Type of browser and operating system used to access our site.
  • Date and time you access our site.
  • Internet address of the website from which you linked directly to our site.
  • Country and state from which you access our site.
  • Pages you visit and the information you request.
  • Search terms you used to get to our website from an external search engine and terms you used on our site using our search engine.

This information is collected as part of a systems log file that is used internally for technical improvements and site management. We collect this information to create summary statistics to assess what information is of most and least interest to the public, improving visitor experience and identifying system performance or problem areas. We also use the information to measure the number of visitors to the different sections of our website to help us make our site more useful.

The primary purpose of collecting this information is not to track individual visitors to this site. However, in certain circumstances—such as defacement, threats, or potential criminal activity—the Agency may be required by federal law to take additional steps to identify who is using this information. Additionally, the information collected may be shared with other agencies when required by federal law, executive order, or regulation.

Personal Information

Users are NOT required to provide any information to search, retrieve, download, filter and otherwise use the data available on Ibwc.gov. If you choose to provide us with personal information—like filling out a form on Ibwc.gov to ask questions, request a dataset, etc. with an email address—we use that information to respond to your message, and to help get you the information you requested. Providing your email address is optional, and your email address will not be published. We only share the information you give us with another government agency to assist in answering your questions and to better understand user needs for Ibwc.gov, or as otherwise required by law. Any email address provided in connection with your question or suggestion will not be publicly viewable on the website. Ibwc.gov never collects information or creates individual profiles for commercial marketing.

In contacting Ibwc.gov with your questions and comments, you should NOT include additional personal information, especially Social Security Numbers.

Cookies

When you visit some websites, their web servers generate pieces of information known as cookies. Cookies are commonly used to recognize your computer in the future.

Ibwc.gov uses per-session cookies to serve technical purposes, like providing seamless navigation through Ibwc.gov. These cookies do not permanently record data and they are not stored on your computer’s hard drive. Ibwc.gov’s session cookies are available only during an active browser session. When you close your browser, the session cookie disappears.

Ibwc.gov also uses persistent cookies to be able to track the number of unique visitors to the site.

Users can choose to disable cookies using their web browsers. It will not affect their ability to search for, review and retrieve data on the site.

Ibwc.gov does not gather, request, record, require, collect or track any Internet users’ personal information through these processes.

Children's Privacy

Ibwc.gov complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) that helps to protect the safety and privacy of children online. COPPA and its accompanying FTC regulation constitute United States Federal law that protects the privacy of children using the Internet. Personal information from children under 13 is not knowingly collected, nor are children under 13 knowingly contacted by Ibwc.gov. Ibwc.gov does not intend to solicit information of any kind from children under 13. It is possible that Ibwc.gov may receive emails pertaining to children under 13. If Ibwc.gov is notified of this, as soon as the information is verified, parental consent will be immediately obtained or the email will be deleted from the email box servicing Ibwc.gov.

Prohibitions

Ibwc.gov will not link to any website that exhibits hate, bias, or discrimination. Ibwc.gov reserves the right to deny or remove any link that contains misleading information or unsubstantiated claims, or is determined to be in conflict with Ibwc.gov’s policies.

Changes to this Policy

The Ibwc.gov privacy policy will be revised or updated if practices change, or if better ways to keep you informed are developed. You should refer to this page often for the latest information and the effective date of any changes. If changes are made to this policy, a new policy will be posted on our site and the date at the bottom of the page will be updated. Changes to the policy will not apply retroactively.

System of Records Notices

Federal agencies are required by law to ensure the protection of the personally identifiable information (PII) they collect, store, and transmit. With a thriving digital economy, agencies are collecting ever-larger amounts of personal information unlike ever before. Instances of past abuse, misuse, and egregious errors in federal agencies' management of personal information, combined with growing public concern about the U.S. Government's ability to protect their private information, have increased congressional scrutiny and expectations for compliance with federal privacy laws and regulations. Protection of the Government's vast accumulation of personal information begins with the responsibility of federal employees at all levels and in all positions.

The U.S. IBWC is responsible for ensuring proper protections of the information contained within its information systems, including PII. To that end, the Agency developed a Privacy Impact Methodology to assess whether a system that contains PII meets legal privacy requirements.
